What Should You Do When You Face Criminal Charges?

I do my best to stay out trouble with the law. I avoid conflicts and try to help others do so as well. But a few years ago, trouble found me. My ex was quite angry with me after our breakup. Instead of moving on and finding someone else, my ex decided to frame me for something I didn't do. My ex called the authorities and filed abuse charges against me. I explained the situation to the police but they arrested me anyway. I later found out through my criminal attorney that this was illegal. It was my ex's word against mine at the time and I shouldn't have been arrested that day. After spending months clearing my name, I decided to help other victims of unfair crimes. If you need information on criminal law, read my blog. You don't have to fight injustice alone. Good luck.

3 Things To Do If You Get Pulled Over For DUI

If you have been pulled over by the police for a suspected DUI, there are things that you need to know before anything happens. If you do these things, it can make it much easier when it comes to fighting any charges that you may end up getting and can help your attorney help you better.

Stay Calm

The first thing to do is to stay calm. Getting angry, being agitated, or fussing at the police officer who has pulled you over isn't going to help anything. Getting adversarial with the officer is only going to make them take things to the next level. If you can stay calm, listen to the officer, and try to keep the situation calm, you are more likely to have a more positive outcome.

Stay Quiet

You have the right to not answer any of the police officer's questions, just do it politely, because you have the right to not incriminate yourself. You also have the right to refuse to do the field tests or to let them search your car. If you do refuse those things, you can tell them to seek a warrant to do the tests or to search your car. However, there may be times when the police can search your car without your permission or warrant. If that happens, you can talk to your attorney to see what, if any, recourse you may have. Do be aware that if you refuse to do the breathalyzer test or do any field tests, you may end up being arrested and have to go to the hospital so that they can do a blood test to see what is in your system and how much of it is there.

Contact an Attorney

If you are arrested or you receive a ticket for DUI, then you want to make sure that you hire an attorney. You want to make sure that the attorney you hire is one who specializes in DUI cases. They are going to understand all the nuances that go into these cases better than other attorneys will, and will be able to give you the best possible help.

Getting pulled over by the police is never a good thing. Getting pulled over on the suspicion of a DUI is even worse. There are all kinds of issues that can come up when you are pulled over for a DUI and knowing what to do beforehand can make it easier for you in the long run.
